DIY Shop Tech: How To Make Extension Cords For Your Shop That Will Last Forever!

I’ve been making my own custom extension cords for 30 years. I learned this trick from my Grandpa Lanning, who built us custom 220 extension cords for our welders that lasted for decades before I needed to replace the cable. Making your own extension cords means you can put whatever type of ends you want, and in a steel box that is durable and won’t get messed up in a show environment. If I’m building a 110v extension cord I put a steel box on the end with four outlets, but you can do whatever fits your needs. Need regular 110v outlets? Go for it. Need twist locks? Done. You get to do whatever you want and the only thing you have to remember is to keep the wire size appropriate for the load and length.
