While the NHRA will talk about racing in Richmond this weekend the reality is that the event is in Dinwiddie, Virginia. Why does that make a difference to us? Mostly because there is a real drag strip IN Richmond. It it called Richmond Dragway and while it is not a national event facility, it has produced team bracket champions, and it is a neat little place that I checked out the other day. Every time I see a new track I get really interested in the history of the place and that’s why I went sniffing around for old video featuring the property. Thankfully, I found some!

This looks like it was a heck of a day of match racing at the facility as we see everything from the four engined Wagon Master to the awesome Tasca Ford Mustang which we think would have been the “Mystery 9” car. Beyond that there’s plenty of footage showing off stockers and super stockers getting after it, gassers, and more. The one thing that is really typical of an east coast event like this in the time period is the complete an utter lack of dragsters. The east coast has always been more of a door slammer capital than the dragster laden west. There’s not a pipe rack to be seen in this video. Everything has doors!

Enjoy the tunes and the footage and taking a glimpse back into history in 1965. This was the era that the super stockers were starting to morph into the match bashers and the A/FX can an about a year later the world would see the first flip top ‘glass funny car!
