2019 NHRA Gatornationals Photo Bonus: Factory Stockers, Legends, and Hot Rods in The Lanes

2019 NHRA Gatornationals Photo Bonus: Factory Stockers, Legends, and Hot Rods in The Lanes

(Photos by David Whealon) – We know that this is NHRA Vegas 4-Wide week and all but we also know that people love the SAM Tech.edu Factory Stock Showdown and the class put on a show for the ages at the 2019 NHRA Amalie Oil Gatornationals. The record runs fell out of the sky left and right with the ultimate mark being set by Drew Skillman at 7.71. Shortly after the race, rules revisions were made to slow the cars down, notably the Fords and Chevrolets had the drive pulley on the supercharger made larger to slow the blowers down and to take some horsepower away from them. Off-season rules revisions and allowed parts saw the latest generation COPO and Cobra Jet cars pick up massive amounts with more displacement for the Fords and fresh superchargers for both combos.

It was craziness at Gainesville from the get go and these photos really tell a lot of the story. Drew Skillman won the race and the golden Wally. Johnny Calvert won the unofficial wheelie contest with the “all four off” adventure you see here. Skillman’s car actually ran in the 7.60s at the NMCA race but killed an engine in the process. The backup engine pounded the 3,500lb car to the 7.70s!

You’ll also see photos of the legends that took part in the NHRA’s Unfinished Business race during the Gators. Toyota is the official car of the NHRA and thusly, the first call that the sanctioning body made when seeking vehicles. Toyota was all to happy to help and the result was the legends competing in 300hp Camry XSE sedans. The cars ran 14 at about 100mph and it was Warren Johnson who slayed ’em all on race day. It was fun and the crowd went nuts round after round.
