2019 NHRA Virginia Nationals: Action Photos From The Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Car Categories

(Photos by David Whealon) – It was a wild race from start to finish and from end to end at Virginia Motorsports Park last weekend. The NHRA Mello Yello Drag racing series made its eighth stop of the season at the revitalized facility outside of Richmond, Virginia, and the fans were treated to extreme temperatures, extreme excitement, and some pretty awesome upsets in the early rounds of competition. In this gallery we’re going to take a look at the nitro funny car and top fuel classes.

Ron Capps picked up his second race victory in a row with Rahn Tobler as that team has surged back into the championship discussion a third of the way through the season. In top fuel, Steve Torrence seems to have regained the strangulation hold he had on the class during the NHRA Countdown in 2018 as his team roared to a third straight win on the tour with an impressive performance in Virginia.

We’ll catch you up on pro stock when we get to those photos this week as those cars rejoined the tour for the first time in a few races. Their 18-race campaign in 2019 has brought names back into the fold and increased car counts. More on that later.

Independent top fuel and nitro funny car teams ran well at Virginia with Audrey Worm carding her first 3-second run and making Brittany Force work for a round one victory. Lex Joon, Dan Mercier, Ike Maier, and others provided more proof of a groundswell of new and interesting top fuel racers beginning to bubble up with many more to follow.

Here’s the photos featuring fuelers and funny cars from Virginia!
