2019 Mopar Southern Classic Coverage: A Focus On The Slant Six Race and BangShifty Mopars – Photos Here!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – One race we enjoy within this event is the slant-six race.  An event within the event paying homage to the leaning tower of power.  Throughout our galleries from this event there are examples scattered about which include this light blue Lancer, the stretched D50, and the yellow step-side.  These were pitted among several hemi cars including the ‘Glass City Hemi’ Coronet fitted with a 528ci version making over 1,000hp.  There’s definitely some contrast between them.

I must direct your attention to the orange Road Runner (#4968) sitting in staging.  Linda Gibson wheeled this ride to a runner up in her class the evening we were there.  She is 74-years-young and bought this ’69 A12 car new and has owned it ever since.  Not many rides out there snagged new that have been raced their whole existence by the same owners.  Cool stuff.

I expected more later-model stuff because of the popularity, but the majority were 60s and 70s muscle types.  There were some 2000-up racers and we had a sprinkling of Daytonas, a Conquest, Avengers, Dakotas, the skittle, Arrows, and a few others from the 80s and 90s.  I found a lot more variety at an event where I didn’t expect much at all.  The best part might have been that I didn’t contract any weird diseases or have some incurable urge to sell my GM muscle and switch camps.  However, part of my decision process tipping the scales in favor of going to a brand-centric event was our recently-acquired Durango R/T.  Perhaps I have a bit of an infection after all.

One more gallery coming from the 2019 Mopar Southern Classic so stay tuned.

Looks like a great event. Lots of nice cars there.

My old 69-1/2 RR was bought new by a lady that my mom knew. Once we figured out how old she would’ve been at the that time I said “What 42 year old woman walks onto a dealer lot and says I’ll take the orange car with 400HP and the hood I can’t possibly take off by myself??!!”. She said “Well she was always kind of a tomboy!”. Ah gee..you think so?!
