MSD Introduces Affordable Relay Modules for High-Powered Automotive Electronics Control.

The electronics in cars are getting smarter, more powerful, and in some cases more power hungry. Yes there are advancements in things like LED lighting that drastically reduce the power needed, but at the same time there are more and more electrical items in today’s cars. And that technology is spilling over into hot rods, customs, and race cars because we are using more and more technology even in rides that never came with it from the factory. New cars have much larger alternators than our 1960’s muscle cars ever came with, and with new engine swaps and such all that comes with it.

But controlling all these electrical loads now falls to the installer, because there isn’t a factory electrical system in place to do it for them. That’s where Relays come into play. At their core, a relay is really quite simple. Here’s how they work.

Think of a relay as a high-power capable switch. One that can handle 20, 40, or even 60 amps of power running through it. But this switch is remote-controlled by just a tiny little wire that doesn’t need to be able to handle that level of current. So you put this high power switch, or relay, between the battery and your big giant electric fans, so it can turn them on and off. Then you run a little bitty wire to a switch in the dash, or to the controls in your Holley EFI, and that remotely triggers the relay to turn on and off when needed. Simple right?

They make it so you don’t have to run big wires and big electrical loads all through a vehicle. Instead, you keep the big wire runs as short as possible and only run small remote wires through the car.

Check out all the relay options from MSD below. We’ve used many of them and can tell you they make for a handy solution.

Product Description:

MSD’s new line of relay modules is an affordable and efficient solution for controlling high voltage and current electronics in vehicles. With single, dual, and 4 channel options available, these modules are designed to simplify wiring and installation in most automotive electrical systems. They offer independent 40A outputs and configurable single-wire activation, along with LED status indicators and low profile JCASE fuses for protection. The plastic cover of the relay housing ensures a tidy installation and safeguards the main power stud and triggers against contamination and accidental contact.
