Unless you have a hot rod or muscle car that is carbureted and has no electronic upgrades outside an electronic distributor, you need more amps than the factory alternator can provide. Electric fans, electric fuel pumps, high powered ignition systems, stereo, power windows, lighting, fuel injection, digital displays, high powered starters and more can seriously tax the electrical system regardless of how much battery you have in the car. The answer is a good alternator with the proper wiring to support the amp loads needed for your components and for keeping the battery charged. If you are talking race cars, the voltage that your ignition system works on can be higher than normal which causes issues all its own.

At SEMA this week they have debuted a new series of HPR Alternators that have all the bells and whistles you need on your LS equipped ride, and that can be swapped onto just about anything as well.

These alternators are high amperage units that deliver 195 amps at idle speeds and 245 amps at higher rpms. They are available ready to plug into a factory system with ECU integration or with a single wire connection where it will self excite with just 1,000 engine rpm.
