Warning: Bonneville Speed Week attendance will result in an uncontrollable urge to build cars to go speeds no man was intended to reach. You have been warned. We’re not sure of the severity of this addiction if you only look at photos from Bonneville, so check all of ours out at your own risk. Clearly most of the people out here running on the salt this week have an addiction to speed that can only truly be fed by salt, and lots of it.
If you’ve never been to Bonneville, during Speed Week or otherwise, we say you have to come check it out because it might be the closest any hot rodder can get to God. It is biblical here, and a natural wonder that can only be described as awesome in the truest meaning of the word. And in that spirit, the hot rods and race cars on the salt do their best to also represent the word’s meaning as well. This year, they are doing pretty good. But the event is not without it’s challenges. Salt conditions change throughout the day, the week, and sometimes the hour, which means that you are truly racing against the salt, rather than your fellow competitors. The team that gets the handle on the salt the best WILL run quicker than the rest. And then there are the weather and altitude conditions, which often have teams scratching their heads to try and get their tune just right for the altitude.
If you don’t get the tune right, and figure out how to put that power to the salt, you have no chance here at Bonneville. Some people figure out both in hours, many take years. All are addicted to this patch of ground, and can’t imagine not being here each and every year.
