Last week we shared a cool video about grinding the rod journals on the crankshaft that is about to get balanced, which is all a part of a series of videos from Jim’s Automotive Machine revolving around the rebuild of this Pontiac 350. Of course everything being done is completely relevant to any other overhad valve V8 engine, so watch and learn something you might not have known before. Watching Jim work on this engine’s components is really some cool stuff, even though we’ve seen it many times before. In fact, we’re totally showing you stuff out of order just because we think it’s cool, but we’ll share the rest of the steps with you as well if you guys dig the series.
In this video the balancing of the crankshaft is happening right before your eyes. You’ll get to see, and understand bob weights, how they are determined, and why they matter. Note that you’ll also see just how simple the principle of balancing a crankshaft is, but how a deft touch and understanding are needed to do it right. We dig this stuff, love the smell of a good machine shop, and can’t wait to be inside one again. Until then, we’re going to get our fix from Jim’s!
