Blog War: This 1964 Plymouth Savoy Wagon Has a Cross Rammed Big Block, Push Button Drive, And Radio Delete

So we all know what happened to Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise, right? That whole thing didn’t end well. The guy just got straight up pummeled to death and I’ll be honest. The first time I saw that when I was a kid I cried my eyes out. Sad to see a once proud champ just get the stuffing beaten out of him. I feel like that’s the way this whole wagon battle is starting to go and McTaggart has the ‘fro and the red/white/blue trunks on. His Buick entry today is a nice car and it sure is clean but Craig Fitzgerald owns one of those and that guy wears adult diapers so I’m classifying it as a failure. To double his pain, let’s look at this super sweet 1964 Plymouth Savoy which vaporizes his Buick choice in an inferno of win.

The wheels are not my favorite but those are a quick change to white steelies from perfection. The engine is a built 440 equipped with a cross-ram for that old time super stock feel. The rear axle is a Chrysler 8.75″ piece, and it has Calvert leavy springs in the back. The transmission is still shifted with the push buttons to the left of the steering wheel, and the interior has the feel of a prison cell at Ryker’s Island. There’s nothing extra in there, nothing frivolous, and nothing that could immediately be turned into a shank. A little more on those springs. A chassis shop moved them inward and the same shopped also mini-tubbed the car. What this thing needs is a set of 275 (or bigger) radials on the back and some sweet skinnies on the front with (as mentioned before) body color steel wheels.

The body looks great, the under car photos look great, and even the cargo area looks spectacular. For the true freaks out there you will be happy to know that this car has no radio and the hole is blocked with a famed “radio delete” plate on the dash. This thing is some neat door lettering and wheels away from vintage street/strip perfection.

Here’s the text of the ad:

HERE IS A 1964 PLYMOUTH SAVOY WAGON. THIS CAR CAME FROM TEXAS. THE UNDERCARRIAGE HAS BEEN STRIPPED AND PAINTED. A CHASSIS SHOP MOVED THE SPRINGS IN ON THE FRAME RAILS WITH A MOPAR KIT  AND INSTALLED A CAL TRAC SINGLE LEAF SPRING EQUAL TO SUPER STOCK SPRINGS IN LENGTH AND RATE. THE 1965 8.75 SURE GRIP DIFFERENTIAL WAS FITTED WITH SPRING MOUNTS.. IT HAS BEEN PROFESSIONALLY MINI TUBBED. WELD MAG LITE WHEELS ARE MOUNTED ON GOOD TIRES. ENGINE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A 1972 440 THAT HAS BEEN REBUILT BY FAST RACING IN GROVEPORT OHIO. (HAVE RECIEPT) IT HAS A NEW CROSS RAM INTAKE AND CARBS.  IT IS AN 11-1 MOTOR…. DYNO READING 500 HP…TRANNY IS A 1965 TORQUEFLITE ( PUSH BUTTON) ….THE CAR WAS RECENTLY PROFESSIONALLY REPAINTED WHITE……THE REAR AREA WAS JUST REDONE PROFESSSIONALLY…..IF YOU SAW THE CAR BEFORE CHECK IT OUT NOW…..DOOR PANELS ARE ORIGINAL A WELL AS THE DASH…….THIS CAR RUNS STRONG……will entertain lesser trade plus cash…….

    Lohnes scores a big win this round in the Battle of the Brians!

    The Buick is sweet, but can’t match this bruiser!

    “Bout time a Mopar got involved in this scuffle. Lohnes pulls out to a huge lead with this one. I love those Roadbastard wagons, but they got nothing on a cross-ram Mopar wagon.

    FINALLY !!!! A wagon worthy of the contest as well as a wagon that isn’t either a ;

    A Soccermomnster wagon
    An asthmatic pos from the 70’s
    An overweight pretentious pig from any other era
    A hearse wanna be posing as a soccermomnster wagon

    And especially ;

    NOT one with freaking vinyl imitation wood siding

    Toss in one bad***ed engine and a whole sh**load of cool on this one and …

    Lohnes ! By a country f***ing mile !

    Hands down ! No contest ! Blog war , over !

      TJ, a question…. why do you keep changing your name? If you’re not, my apologies….but I think I’m right… you have a very distinct writing style and , ahem, attitude toward things…..again, if I’m wrong my apologies – I’ll sling a guitar into the Colorado River if I’m wrong…..

        Truly this is a nice piece, and a nice change of pace from previous entries which have mostly been pretty lame.

    It’s hard to say this, but on a website comprised of pages and pages of cool cars, this has to be among the top 5 coolest.

    “The war’s over, man, Lohnes dropped the big one…”

    Unless McTaggart finds something equal to Bluto’s speech plus D-Day’s welding skills, this contest is ovah!

    SIGH . . . for the umpteen time . . . there is no such thing as a radio delete!! UNLESS . . . the car came standard with a radio which very few (only a few luxury cars) 1960’s car did.

    Chripes! Is that so hard to understand? You can have a heater delete. You can have a disc brakes delete (if standard and drums were offered) and any delete where an option was standard and you didn’t want it (very few other deletes)

    The masses have spoken! The wagon battle is over! I mean come-on even Slinger and ColorodoKid don’t have anything bad to say about this one. This wagon just has too much going for it. A 401 Ambassador wagon couldn’t even drag me away from this beast.

    To me Chrysler created the sleeper car…this car should be the winning vote just for all the guys in the brand new GTO’s and big block Vettes back in 1964 that got spanked by a station wagon with a push button tranny
