There’s A Buick Straight Eight Redline Rebuild Coming And This Preview Video Sets It Up!

We love the Hagerty Redline Rebuild series that they have been producing for a couple of years now. Almost every engine platform you can think of has been a part of the time lapse fun and they have even expanded it into some longer form videos that go in-depth on what was done to save the engine. The boys are going to be messing with another Buick engine for the next one and we meet the engine and the car it lives in here. The mill is a 1951 Buick straight eight plucked from the nose of a band find 1951 Buick Super convertible. These were legendary engines in their day and we’ve never actually seen one ripped down so that will be fun.

The Buick straight eight had an amazingly long run from 1931 to 1953. Along the way the engine grew from 221ci all the way to 263ci which is what the engine in this Super should be. Power production was not not incredible at about 120hp but the torque production was really strong and these inliners are as smooth as the day is long so they’re the right fit for luxury/muscle style cars of their time.

The straight eight was replaced by the venerable Nailhead engine which would live for a decade plus all over the Buick lineup and kept the heritage of torque making alive and well. There were two different blocks used for these engines depending on what car they were intended for. It will be neat to learn more about this one once the guys get pulling it apart!
