Bump Steer: What Is It? How Do You Measure It? Can You Fix It? The Basics Are Right Here, So Watch.

We’re going to be sharing a lot more tech around here in 2025, including a bunch on suspension systems, but we figured that sharing this short video on Bump Steer from the guys at TRZ would be good. If you have been around much, you have heard the term bump steer. Bump steer is exactly what is sounds like. It is steering that happens when you hit a bump. And it isn’t good.

Bump steer happens as front suspension travels up and down from ride height because the tie rod isn’t traveling in the same arc as the spindle. If the geometry between the steering linkage and suspension isn’t right, then the wheels will toe in or out as the suspension travels up and down. Clearly this can cause problems if it is really bad, because if bump steer is significant on your ride then as you hit bumps or dips in the road it will make the front wheels steer without you even turning the steering wheel.

Watch the video to see examples and how it can be fixed.
