(Photos by Billy Simcox – Provided by Racepak) – If there’s a MUST ATTEND event for hardcore drag racing fans these days it is catching the Southeast Gassers at Greer Dragway in South Carolina. Yes, the group travels and any time you get the chance to see Quian Stott and his band of (sometimes) merry men you should take it but to see these cars run at this track is truly a special experience. Every time we see photos from the Greer Dragway events we’re always angry that we were not there. Thankfully photographer Billy Simcox was there and even more thankfully the guys at Racepak allowed us to share some of his awesome photos from the event.

If you are unaware of the group, these guys keep a very tight lid on the rules to keep cars period correct to the 1960s period in which they are supposed to be coming from. Modern technology is virtually banned. Period suspension, parts, pieces, and components are mandatory and the cars all look straight off the pages of vintage drag racing magazines. Heck, there was a car running at the event that had not been fired for 30 something years and was in the same exact gasser trim it competed in back in the day. How’s that for awesome?!

Greer Dragway is a small place and it was filled to literal capacity last weekend with people who love this sport at its most basic level. We sound like Sally the cheerleader every time we talk like this but the sport of drag racing is doing really well right now and races like this are as important an indicator of its health as anything you will see. For the Greer Dragway staff to have to literally lock the gate and prevent people from entering says something!

They do this one right. Bret Kepner on the mic, high winding stick shift (mostly) cars on the track that look and sound perfect, backup professionals in period garb. This rules!
