(Photos by Wes Allison) – When it comes to land speed racing, there are a couple of metrics to define a successful meet. Were there a bunch of records set? Did people make personal best runs? Did everyone’s car leave in one piece after the last run was made? In the case of the April 2021 El Mirage SCTA gathering, it sure seems that all of those boxes were checked. Records were set in multiple categories, there were no reports of scary carnage, and it was a sellout in terms of entires. People came from all over America to run on the famed silt course that tests not only horsepower but the ability of drivers to navigate this nefarious surface.

These photos are the second batch we have posted since getting home from the place that stands as one of the true crucibles of speed in hot rodding history. Like the first, you’ll see cars of all shapes and sizes as well as action images of the hot rods leaving the starting line or their push trucks.

Racing at El Mirage is a true kind of “re-birth” moment for racing and hot rodding. Sure, NASCAR, NHRA, and IndyCar have been running, dirt ovals have been open, but in terms of absolute grass roots competition, nothing beats LSR on the dirt. It’s really cool to see these cars and people getting it done!
