It has been a heck of a year for Big Chief and the Crow Mod. The car has been run all over the country, it has been run as an NHRA legal pro mod, and now it has been into the 3-second zone in the eighth mile which was a stated goal that Justin Shearer has had for himself since the first Outlaw Street Car Reunion race in Memphis where he went 4.01. This run has been a long time coming for the Pontiac stalwart and as you will see, the place went wild when he did it.
The car has a “real” Pontiac engine in the sense that the block architecture and cylinder heads are of the Pontiac style. The heads are actually a set of Edelbrock Performers that have been touched up. The car runs a whole bunch of boost through the motor to make the necessary power to run these numbers. When he ran with the NHRA boys at Indy, the NHRA rules knocked down the boost that the car was able to run, hence its more pokey performance. This thing was tuned up to kill and on this run it did.
Big Chief and the Crow Mod are in many ways the biggest names in the sport of drag racing in 2016. He’s a huge brand in and unto himself and he’s the kind of guy who loves the sport to hit core. We’re among the crowd applauding this moment for Shearer, it is pretty awesome!
Just curious – I’m not familiar with ProMod rules & other ‘fast’ classes: back when we ran Super comp & other ‘Super’ classes, we had to have a trans-blanket & bell housing shield. I notice Chief’s trans is totally exposed. We all know trans cases can crack & explode. Of course, we ran factory cases and his is probably aftermarket. What gives?
Aftermarket case is stronger and carries an SFI approval.
He runs a dose of nitromethane which he could not do running in tbe Pro Mod class, thats why he couldnt keep main bearings in it!
Wrong. He had a oil port blocked in the motor and it was starving the bottom end
Probably a Reid case and bell
Those cases themselves are SFI rated and do not require it
How many have run 3.99 @ 190 in the 1/8th with a Pontiac? That’s what I thought. Justin is one bad jose. He knows how to run on the street and the track! Billet 5″ BS block with Tiger heads. Just a thought. Kaase, you out there?
Only those that participate in Hot Rod’s Dragweek ,know how to do both!
