Video: Watch Highlights From The 1977 NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, Ohio!

This video rules so, so hard. Why? This is not just a highlight reel from the 1977 NHRA Springnationals, it is a class by class look at the race, there’s footage of Pro Comp and a great explanation of the competition as well. The names are awesome and they are not just the same old same old. You’ll see Dale Hall and his small block dragster beat a funny car, you’ll see Ron Boggs in his altered tearing it up, and you’ll see machines that run in the Gas classes, Modified eliminator, etc.

There’s also plenty of time with Gary Beck who’s domination of top fuel had waned by this time and he was trying to get back on the horse. We get to see Dyno Don Nicholson running pro stock against Frank Iaconio, Bob Jenkins winning funny car eliminator, Clive Skilton the British racer nearly winning a race, and the list goes on and on and on.

Hell, even Butch Leal’s awesome hemi powered B/Gas car of Butch Leal is profiled here. This really is one of the best old videos we have seen. The success of Dale Hall at this race is fun to watch. Hall from Connecticut was running a slingshot dragster with a blown small block Chevy in it, taking on funny cars and rear engine dragsters as well as altered with significantly larger engines. He was one of the most brilliant NHRA drag racers of all time.

This year at Columbus, the track will host Jegs SPEEDweek which will combine an NHRA divisional event with the Jeg’s Sportsnationals back to back creating a 4-5 days long extravaganza of speed, power, and excitement. It looks a lot different now than it did then but the action will be just as hot and heavy!
