Watch Justin Cyrnek Make The First 4.50s Pass In MX235 History – A Thing Of Beauty

(Video credit: FreeLifeFilms YouTube Channel) – One of the most entertaining classes to watch at the 2017 Outlaw Street Car Reunion was MX235. The relatively new and hotly growing category of drag racing takes the small tire theme to an extreme, limiting racers to options like a 235/60/15 radial or a 26 x 8.5 x 15 slick. In most forms the cars weigh around 3,000lbs and chassis modifications are also reasonably limited as well. Front suspension and chassis alterations are verboten but out back you can get a little more creative. Engines? You can go as big as 640ci, you can run a healthy sized ProCharger or up to a 14-71 blower. Nitrous is pretty much wide open and the turbochargers are limited to either a single 88mm piece or twin 72mm units.

One of the questions coming into the race surrounded the breaking of the 4.50 barrier (this is obviously an eighth mile class). No one to this point in the history of the class and we’re guessing drag racing in general had been into the 4.50s. There was a guy coming who people suspected could do it and he did do it…twice. Justin Cyrnek had his freshly revamped by Larry Jeffers Race Cars Mustang on hand and it was working like a champ. The car uses a 351x modular engine with a large single turbo to get the job done and it was nothing but consistent all weekend. He “unofficially” set the record during testing with a 4.56 pass but the one you will see in the video below is the one that actually counts as it came in competition.

Watch the car rocket to a 4.58/159mph elapsed time and speed in Memphis and pay close attention to the ridiculousness of the rear tires. There’s nothing to them. The car will see duty in X275 where the additional tire and additional aggression out of the engine could have it running in the 4.30s.

Al Tucci named it the Margarita and the moniker seems to have stuck. The boys were toasting at the end of this weekend because they know that they have a horse that can run and run hard.

Unbelievable. Amazing what is happening with the advance of computers that control everything.

I remember the first time I watched Outlaw 8.5 cars years back before the new computer systems were developed. What a hoot. More slipping and sliding than I ever saw on front lawns back in the 1960’s courtesy of good old Wham-O.
