(Photos by David Whealon – DWPhotos) – If there are two classes in NHRA competition more fascinating than alcohol funny car and top alcohol dragster we’re not really sure what they are. These family based teams race with a level of heart and soul that is nearly impossible to describe and the cars are so fun to watch they are a gem in the scene of things on any race weekend that they appear. Annie Whitely took the alcohol funny car honors at Gainesville which was awesome because her kid Steven won in Pro Mod! On the dragster side, Justin Ashley took home the Wally driving one of Randy Meyer’s cars and he had one of the most stupefying dragster performances since the days of Bill Reichert romping and stomping through the class.
Ashley’s car lived in the middle 5-teens the entire weekend, dipping as low as 5.14 and other than the second team car driven by Randy Meyer’s daughter Meghan, he was far and away the class of the field. Rich McPhillips met the kid in the final and those guys made their best run of the weekend against him but the dragster with the word EPIC down the side in huge font was just too much for them.
Enjoy these photos from two of the great classes of NHRA competition.
