A couple of weeks go we reported on the 1,000+hp LT5 that Katech had created with the stock fuel system and minimal amounts of bolt on parts. That particular engine still had the stock camshaft in it. We also reported that the guys at Katech would be working on this project further with a dedicated plan to make more power and really explore the limits of the engine along the way.
Well, amazingly they pushed this LT5 with a completely stock bottom end to 1,486hp on the dyno before they voluntarily stopped and took it apart. After dozens of pulls, after all the abuse, after living with 30+ psi of boost in tis face for a long time, the engine was not exactly happy about life. It was not blown up but it was kind of on the way there with at least one connecting rod taking an S-shape after being worked so hard on the dyno in various testing situations.
The neatest part of this video is that the Katech team walks us through each step in their build approach and the associated testing results. You’ll see what they did and how they did it, ultimately achieving the huge power numbers at the end.
You can and should check out the dedicated videos for each step in the process after watching this one because those go into dome depth about what was specifically done, how things work, and what they learned with the addition of the new parts.
It is safe to say that if you own an LT5 powered hot rod, you have PLENTY of room to make additional power out of your stock short block. How cool is that?!
What kind/variant of LS is a LT5?
