This video, produced by the Schlitz Beer company is called, “Drag Race U.S.A” and it examines the sport of drag racing at what was arguably the height of popularity in 1970. In fact, the video claims that drag racing is the most popular spectator sport in the country at the time. All the big names are shown as well as all the great classes. Early Pro Stocks, Top Fuel Dragsters, and the ever evolving Funny Cars are all part of the action, even better though is all the sportsman footage!
You’ll see all kinds of stockers, gassers, and other weekend warriors shown, complete with bitchin’ old school paint and lettering. You will also see lots of Schlitz beer cans, so many that it seems everyone in the damn world drinks the stuff, but we guess that’s what the promotional video is supposed to do!
Schlitz was involved with a few cars in this era, primarily funny cars. It was prime time for anyone in what was the beer brewing capitol of America for many years to cash in. The brewery business would begin to change drastically about 10 years after this film was made but in the early 1970s Schlitz was one of the largest beer brands in America and you can tell by the way that this film was made, they had some serious marketing jack.
