Mini Block, Big Problems: Can The Machine Shop Save A 1965 Mini Block With A Badly Gouged Deck?

Mini Block, Big Problems: Can The Machine Shop Save A 1965 Mini Block With A Badly Gouged Deck?

When last we left this latest Hagerty Redline Rebuild project, Davin had pulled the 1965 Mini engine apart and things looked a little grave. Why? The deck had some bizarre gouges in it. We’re not talking little marks from a razor blade or something, we are talking marks that look like they came from a die grinder or something and they ran right into the tops of the cylinder bores, really badly in one cylinder. The engine was consuming all kinds of oil and depending on the machine shop’s opinion, this thing was either going to be saved or hurled into the dumpster.

Well, as it usually the case, the professionals got their hooks into this problem and came up with the right plan of attack. It should be mentioned that a great piece of preparation helped this whole thing come together. The fact that Davin went the extra mile in disassembly and recorded how deep the pistons were in their respective holes helped everyone come up with a workable solution here. Not having that information would definitely have muddied the waters some here.

Enjoy this trip to the machine shop to determine the fate of the Mini engine!
