NHRA Insider Podcast: Over The Mountain and Under The Radar – Talking To Greg Anderson and Tommy Johnson Jr On The Western Swing

The third stop on the NHRA Western Swing in 2019 is Pacific Raceways. This historic track in Kent, Washington is known for its great setting and its oxygen rich environment. It is also known as a real humbler for many racers who have come in with momentum after Denver and Sonoma.

Greg Anderson is the only NHRA racer left that can sweep the swing. The driver of the Summit Racing Equipment Camaro is feeling the flow. He’s the only guy who has ever swept in Pro Stock and he did that 15 years ago back in 2004. Anderson was off to a disappointing start to the 2019 season with only one final round appearance before Denver which resulted in a loss at the Virginia Nationals. His resurgence began at Denver, a race he has now won two years in a row and its arguably the hardest race to win on the circuit. Winning in Sonoma was interesting for Anderson as his path included some weird occurrences to competitors and not exactly the kind of starting line reaction time package we expect to see from a winning pro stock driver. He talks about that here. He’s currently second in the pro stock points and yet we don’t hear people talking about him as a front line championship contender. Interesting, right?

Tommy Johnson Jr. has multiple wins on the 2019 season so far. He is only about five rounds out of first place and he’s a guy who perennially finishes in the top five and kind of sneaks his way in there. The Make-A-Wish Charger SRT Hellcat bodied funny car won in Chicago, blowing up in the lights and then TJ had a dramatic victory in Denver, a track he first went to the finals at in 1984! It was his first win at the track after more than 30 years of trying. Incredible, right? TJ talks about his team, the leadership of crew chief John Collins and how these guys are going to get it done through the rest of the year.
