The American Powertrain Parting Shift: A Doug Nash 5-Speed, A High Winding Chevelle, And A Driver

The American Powertrain Parting Shift: A Doug Nash 5-Speed, A High Winding Chevelle, And A Driver

My most major contribution to society as a whole has been the creation of the Parting Shift blog item that we run on most Fridays through the year. The items always involve shifting a transmission in some sort of way, the majority of the videos are drag strip passes but we have had big rigs in there, automatics, road racers, and more. By far, the most popular videos are the gear slamming drag racers who need to be accurate and very speedy with their shifts to win their rounds and advance in competition. This Parting Shift video is just that, drag racer Gary Klavon who competes with the legendary Ozark Super Shifters group is on full display in this Les Mayhew short film called Powershift. We see him hammer the gears out of the car and then we go in the car and watch him sling that Doug Nash five speed like a true pro. Between Mayhew’s video skills and Klavon’s talents with the shifter, this is perfection on may levels.

The car is a classic Chevelle that has been Gary’s weapon of choice for more than four decades and it shows. The man obviously knows this thing like the back of his hand and we absolutely love the wear on the shifter handle. There have been lots of gripping and ripping runs in this car and we hope that Gary is able to make thousands more before he decides to hang it up. When he does, I think they should bronze the clutch pedal out of this sucker!

ps – wonder if the ‘new’ trans tunnel was the result of a clutch boomie? – been there, too!

So much going on, I love it. A friend of mine has a wicked chopped Nova with an injected rpm loving small block with a DN 5 speed. So much fun to watch and listen to.

Now THAT is how a manual transmission is meant to be shifted when drag racing. Used to be EVERY one shifted like that. It’s becoming a lost art among the younger generation.

Funny you mention that. Back in the 60’and 70′ that’s the only way we shifted. Not that many automatics. I agree, a lost art.
