NHRA Super Stock Video: Watch A SS/VX Volkswagen Take On A Super Stock A/Hemi Barracuda!

So I kind of enjoy the sport of drag racing. I enjoy it in all of its various forms. From no-prep to top fuel, every class has something to offer in terms of entertainment and uniqueness. NHRA super stock is one of my most favorite things in the world and the major reason is the match ups that sometimes come together in eliminations. In all of my years of drag racing I had never seen a VW bug race race a hemi powered Barracuda. That was until last weekend in Sonoma, California last weekend. What you are about to see is Oregon’s Doug Colley in his SS/VX bug taking on Jerry Jenkins in his 1968 Barracuda that’s part of the legendary West Coast Hemis team which is based in California.

No, this is not a heads up race. If you are unfamiliar with Super Stock racing, when it comes time for eliminations the racers dial in their cars and race with a handicapped start. That is unless two cars of the same category line up and then it is heads-up no, breakout fun.

142ci of air-cooled VW boxer engine taking on 426ci of Ma Mopar legendary hemi. I don’t care who you are. If this does not trip your trigger you are reading the wrong website.

Had a buddy that bought Jed St. Angelo’s “Northeast Raider, ’63 lightweight Plymouth, a very quick, winning car. Every week, it seemed, it came down to him and Ronnie Morehead in the Morehead Auto Sales Volvo B16 (I think) which was something like X/S.
My buddy just couldn’t stand to sit and watch that Volvo getting smaller and smaller, and usually physc’d himself out and fouled. I think he only beat that little car once! Funny thing is, Morehead still has the car, and brought it out for Dover Drag Strip’s reunion at Lebanon Valley Dragway. His kids (who race NHRA super stock today) had a great time watching ol’ dad wringing uot that little car, and said every time he’d dump the clutch on the line, rust would fall out of the rear fenders!
