The American Powertrain Parting Shift: Ride With Dave Cech In His NHRA J/Stock 1966 Chevy II

Stock eliminator is a favorite class for both Chad and I and it only seemed natural to run a cool stocker video for this week’s American Powertrain Parting Shift. This little car is awesome. Belonging to Nebraska’s Dave Cech it is a 1966 Chevy II that is classified here as a J/Stock. We’re guessing it is a 283ci small block combo and it is of course hooked to a four speed. Perfection!

This car has previously been an NHRA national record holder in the class and it runs down in the 11s in the “hundred-teens” as far as speed goes. Clean as a whistle for good reason, Cech is a body man who operates a collision business when he is not hitting the trail with this great little car.

NHRA stock eliminator has been contested at national events since the 1960 Nationals. It is a fan favorite and in many ways these are the original “small tire” race cars. For years competitors were restricted to a 7″ wide slick. Now the standard is 9″ wide and frankly that’s still not all that much tire! While the majority of these cars run in the neighborhood of what Dave  is running here, late model machines are knocking on the 7-second barrier. Take that for what you will.

The sounds of this little small block digging in and running hard are awesome and Dave does a real nice job with the gear lever to make his shifts flat-footed down the track. Great car and a stout driver to boot!

Press play and ride with Dave Cech in his 1966 Chevy II NHRA J/Stock

I love to see anyone driving the manual 4 speed cars anymore. Odds aren’t always with you to win, but you are driving it down the track. Not a violent racer but a very cool car.

It is the 220 hp 283 combination.
Lenco… ha ha ha NO faceplated jericho 4 speed
Valve float… no that engine doesn’t turn much more than 7500.
