The Datsun drifted over just about the exact moment that Schlein was passing and that’s when things got bad. Schlep made a move to miss the Datsun, which was successful, but in the process he got into the wall in his own car. The Datsun got away from this one without a scratch but the Mustang was pretty well banged up.
We never like seeing stuff like this happen because everyone involved has nice stuff. We did not know what happened to McCain’s car until we talked to the team and they are the ones that told us that the steering rack got jammed after the hard wheelie landing. He was wrestling with it the whole time that the car headed across the track.
Watch this one from a few angles, it is nuts and we’re glad that no one was hurt. Wild!
I had just regrouped from watching one of my favorite cars (Jarod Wenrick) hit the wall when I heard you screaming over the golf cart radio as we rode through the pits. That was one of the scariest incidents I’ve ever seen. Could’ve been a jillion times worse.
Appeared he failed to let off when the car in the other lane was going to share his lane! From that far behind…..took a chance and lost!
LOTS a issues here…Let’s start with doing 100 ft burnouts through people standing on the track. I guess the track is hoping that flimsy piece of paper they get folks to sign will hold up in court when one of these cars get’s all Group B on them and takes out 15 or 20 of these idiots. Then there’s the double tap on the wheel-stand. You’re already on the bumper but hey – let’s try to ride it out with the throttle. Then once down, very slow to realize he’s drifted into the other lane. Yes the write up states steering damage but there wasn’t even an attempt to steer out of the lane until it was too late. I’ll give the guy a break on the steering one as I’ve come down hard and it takes a second to get your bearings. And of course, the previously mentioned Mustang at full throttle when the guy in the other lane is in trouble.
If I was a driver of a car in those events, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be doing a rolling burnout through a crowd! Unfortunately, it will take somebody getting hit by a car (or part of a car) to change it. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet.
You pretty much got all of it covered Davey… (and I like your Group B reference, it’s gonna have to take that before anyone puts the brakes on this mess)
I’m distracted by the starting line insanity. The burnout thru the crowd at close quarters is insanity.
Oops, I got beat by Davey!
I have been making comments about these dumb s%ts on the starting line ever since this type of so called drag racing started.
Nothing but crickets from those promoting this stuff……………
It’s hard to defend idiocy and keep any credibility.
Crickets cause of greed, seeing the $$$’s… Hate to say it, but isn’t this article just another form of promotion?
I agree with Davey. How the hell can a track allow people to stand on the track at any time? I know here near me they charge an extra $20.00 to stand on the track. I have been at Byron at the wheel stand show. You hear the car.You cant see it then the nose of the car comes up from within the crowd. Its gona happen,it will . Anyway about this race. I know just enough to be dangerous. So I have a couple questions 1st,was this a bracket race or a qualifying run? why was the Mustang soooo late leaving? And if you have a drag car and you see someone in your lane ,don’t you lift ? If its a qualifying run I guess I kinda get it .You still need a number on the pass to maybe get lane choice. But shouldn’t safety be your first concern. And yes I am bench racing the shit out of what took 2 seconds to happen. Like I said I know just enough to maybe stupid.
I can NOT believe the number of COMPLETE IDIOTS on the starting line lined up right next to the burnouts… and yes, the mustang, why the hell didn’t he lift earlier seeing the Datsun in his lane! Insanity and looks to me like a great sample video for “natural selection”!
I am with the other guys about the starting line comments , this has to stop. This is a ticking time bomb.
THE BLUE CAR HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO SHUT DOWN AND AVOID WRECKING HIMSELF
YOU CAN HEAR HIM STILL ON THE THROTTLE WHILE THE OTHER CAR IS IN HIS LANE
HE HAS NOBODY TO BLAME BUT HIMSELF FOR THE WRECKED RACE CAR
Hey , why not build a mega horsepower engine with nitrous and drop it in the tinniest car possible ? , it will be stable as hell -not
‘we don’t need no stinkin wheelie bars’. AGAIN…the tire pressure in one slick is higher than the combined IQ of the starting line buttholes, which shouldn’t be there. some day there will be a big accident and take a bunch of people and KIDS.
how can these so called professional tracks let this crap go on. and why does bangshift promote it????
this another reason for free birth control and abortions…….
I find it interesting that the cages need to be certified but you don’t need wheelie bars, better suspensions, or safer steering. Why make that stuff so light in these giant hp cars if it fails? No sense.
Changes will only take place by the combined efforts of Bangshift and other drag racing sites to boycott these events. No reporters, no photographers, no Ads, no pre- or post-race coverage, no videos. As consumers: don’t watch event videos, click on event-related links, or share on social media. At the extreme, don’t go to these tracks or buy merchandise from companies that sponsor the races. And tell them why you are doing it.
100,000 lost views are more effective than 100,000 complaints afterward in the comments section.
I must be missing something here… the Mustang, took a 2 second nap at the tree?
Then at the end… the Datsun…was towing the Smart Car? I obviously have something wrong. And yes I agree with the rest, those folks don’t belong that close. The crew member could barely get the door of the Datsun open after backing the driver up, because people were in the way. That’s insane. I don’t think I would race like that.
Haha…. No the smart car was pushing the Datsun. That’s a bar not a rope. It does look funny though 🙂
