Thanks to BangShift forum member BigDad, I found this footage of the wildest drag strip crash I have ever seen. My eyes have witnessed some true weirdness over the years at tracks. I thought the time I saw a dragster back up and OVER an altered was the craziest thing ever…then this video surfaced. Filmed at a humble strip somewhere in Canada (or a strip with a Canadian announcer anyway), you’ll see a pair of bracket cars come to stage. There’s an old roadster and a Fox-body Mustang. All seems to be going normally and then you hear a stout burnout start.

That stout sound belongs to the engine powering a funny car that has begun to heat the hides. One problem…the Mustang hasn’t left the starting line yet. The driver of the funny car absolutely mashes into the back of the poor Ford lifting the rear off the ground before causing the car to roll partially down the course. We don’t see the driver of either vehicle get out, but the Mustang guy definitely got the lighter end of this one. The funny car body is completely and utterly destroyed and the front end is probably junk, too.

How did this happen? Maybe the throttle hung open in the flopper when the driver was pulling it into the water? Maybe the guy didn’t wait on the signal of a crew guy to start the burnout? Maybe the funny car driver was flying solo and literally could not see the Mustang in front of the big pile of blower and engine he was looking over as he rolled onto the racing surface.

The good news is that outside of one guy with a fire extinguisher, not one safety person seemed to give a damn about what they had just seen. No running for kill switches or even showing any sort of outward reaction to the event at all. Calm, cool, and collected….or comatose. You decide.
