Sonny Leonard is now and will forever be considered one of the best big cubic inch engine builders ever. The words “mountain motor” have been defined by a handful of men over the years with Leonard largely leading the charge. It was a couple of years ago that he released an engine package so nutty we still double take when we think about it. The 1,000ci engine provides an honest 2,000hp without a whiff of nitrous or a measly pound of boost. It is a high winding, massive bore, long stroke, combo with heads that flow like sewer pipes. If you don’t believe us, all you have to do is press play on the video below and watch Sonny himself operate the SuperFlo dyno at his shop with one of the big beasts on it. The sound of that baby closing in on 8,000 RPM is pretty flipping awesome.

There was a time when a 500ci engine was monstrous and let’s be honest. To mere mortals like us and many of you, 500ci still represents a BIG engine. From my experience at the drags I can tell you that 632ci engines are basically growing out of the ground and being harvested by the bushel, judging on how many are out there now. Once you get past the 706/707ci stuff, the world gets pretty wild. Back when I worked for IHRA the common engine size for mountain motor pro stocks was what it still is now. Between 820 and 830ci was the “norm”. These engines are physically mammoth. With huge valve covers that true gearheads can appreciate the scale of.
