We’d never recommend going to the drag strip knowing you were going to completely violate the rules that the track needs to uphold but we can certainly understand the need/want to “test out” a car like the Corvette you see below. This 1971 ‘Vette is clean, nice, and it looks like a fine cruiser. All of that is well and good until you see it run 9s multiple times at Brainerd, Minnesota. The driver got and earful from the starter on his second run as you’ll see and to his credit he tried to back the thing off but still ran 9.99 while lifting and braking. This is one absolute monster of a car and it looks like it should have a little small block in it.

Corvettes didn’t completely lose their nards in the early 1970s. It was the middle 1970s when government regulations and other factors caused theses cars to be come toothless shells of their former bad ass ‘selves. This car is obviously packing some hardcore power and because there is little to no information on the video we have to blindly guess at what the engine may be. We’re going to say big block while taking the shift points under consideration and the fact that there seems to be no power adders involved. Obviously no blower through the hood, not quiet turbo exhaust, and no visible nitrous purge has us thinking that it just has an old school big block that is all kinds of angry. Maybe even as angry as the starter at the strip.

Hopefully this car is street driven and he has fun with it there as well. With the small amount of gear that the guy has with respect to safety maybe that’s the deal. This is just a nasty street car that he wanted to get some numbers out of so he ran the thing. The video description says that the car has been 9.70s before and these runs were all made while lifting to prevent being thrown out of the strip. Cage that thing and really hammer it!

I’m surprised that the track didn’t make him remove the centre caps and trim rings from his rally wheels before the run.

Easy horsepower and great tracks make for a whole bunch of seriously fast cars anywhere you go these days! As far as the uptight Dads comment? I guess I am one. I play by the rules for my type of competition. Trying to go 200 mph in a stock steel fox body while being financially handcuffed by ever changing safety rules leaves me a bit bewildered that a $400 Chinese turbo on a 200 dollar junkyard LS powering a 95 street driven Camaro might want to one day run next to me at a 1/2 mile event. I dont have a problem with him wrecking his crazy fast, hub cap wearing c-clip axle crap, Don’t take me or someone else out doing it though..

Sometimes all someone is looking for is a 1/4 mile number to go with their new build or whatever. Not worth going all out building a drag car if it’s never going to see the strip again. Could always decide not to race against that person if that’s how you feel about it though.

You go dude! Thing is perfect the way it is.

Launches straight and doesn’t look like it’s working hard at all

Anyone who calls out someone concerned with safety is an idiot. Sorry, after coming from a motorcycle road racing world where safety is paramount anyone who thinks that rollbars, nets, halon systems etc., are for dads isn’t the guy I want next to me in the lanes, or on the start grid. Nothing personal, but put your hand up if you want to get collected by someone who thinks they know better than the Safety Safari or tech? The accidents I’ve seen at the strip and on track in the last 40 years would have had uglier results hundreds of times over if there hadn’t been rules regarding safety in place.

No prep racing is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, and we’re lucky we’re not seeing the dead racer stat sheet climb weekly, these redneck yahoos live to see people hurt, and a complete pass isn’t what they’re there for.

And last time I checked I’m still entitled to an opinion. You want to ride with a beanie or race with no safety equipment we shouldn’t have to pay your medical bills.
