A little while back we put out the call for info on the Peace Maker wheelstanders from our readers. Jim Brewer ran a series of these Caddy bodied exhibition machines and they were all cool to look at. Thanks to BangShifter Robert Chambers we have video of the 1987 version of this car blowing the rear axle out from under it at Great Lakes Drag-o-Way in Union Grove, Wisconsin. The video was shot by Rob Stelford and you will see the axle spit out and then the car up close down in the pits.
We actually called Bret Kepner who was announcing that night to see if he remembered it and while he did, the story he told about the background noises in the video are even better. While you will hear the crowd react to the Caddy spitting the axle you will hear a high pitched motorcycle in the background getting real cheers as it burns the rear tire to the cords and beyond at the same time that Brewer’s car is being pulled off. According to Bret, there’s no mistaking the fact that the crowd was totally into the motorcycle show rather than the remains of Jim Brewer’s car being yanked off the track.
