BangShift Question Of The Day: Where Have All The Automotive Stunts Gone?

BangShift Question Of The Day: Where Have All The Automotive Stunts Gone?

Maybe we’re just old people now and are missing the boat but where are all the automotive stunts, anymore? Seriously? Back in the 1980s you could not change the channel without seeing the likes of Brian Carson, Spanky Spangler, and a load of other doing something awesomely stupid with cars. Whether it was the Astro Spiral Jump, a mid-air collision, a flaming blast though a half dozen cars on end of a ridiculous distance jump with a bad ending, these guys were everywhere. Now? The best we are able to do is glean crappy phone video from a circle track in the middle of nowhere for our jumping fix.

Before you mention Travis Pastrana’s Las Vegas deal, understand that we’re talking apples to oranges here. That was a motorcycle. We’re talking car stunts this rant and the serious lack of them in today’s world. A recent memory of the late Ken Carter triggered this thought and this question.

Are we wrong or have car stunts totally fallen off the freaking map?

Uhhh, gymkhana? Monster energy also has some series I can’t remember the name of but it’s in the desert with off-road trucks and bikes. I think Baldwin might also have his own series with his truck, I remember one he did in cuba a couple years ago. Everything is on YouTube now

Remember the Hurricane hell drivers at the Danbury fair in CT when I was a kid. Great to watch.

Same as everything else. The cost of buying vehicles to use and the staggeringly stupid cost of event insurance. That kind of stuff probably won’t ever happen again unfortunately.

So happy I got to see Joie Chitwood at our town fair when I was like 9. That show was awesome!!

Saw a guy jump 6 cars riding a motorcycle backwards at Skagit Speedway in the 90s. Yes sitting on the seat backwards looking of his shoulder!

Sure they can. There’s a lot of Impalas, Malibus, Fusions, and a ton of other crap can vehicles that can do demolition derbies and also ramp launch into more crap can cars.
What kills the idea of it now is everything else is freaking expensive. Insurance, medical, clean up, etc…
I miss those stunt specials on TV.
