Executive Candidate: This 1968 Galaxie XL Fastback Is Unrestored And Would Be A Fun Cruiser

Executive Candidate: This 1968 Galaxie XL Fastback Is Unrestored And Would Be A Fun Cruiser

I am a bad shopper. Or maybe I am a good shopper and a bad buyer. I have been looking at cars and trucks for over a year now and I have not been able to pull the trigger on anything that I have seen. Sometimes it has been because of flaky sellers that annoyed me, other times because I get up in my own head and wonder if what I am looking at is what I really want.

Combine that with spending about 300 days a year on the road for work and it’s a recipe for not buying stuff. There have been some constants though and one of them has been the Ford Galaxie. I have looked at a bunch of them ranging from the early 1960s slightly pre-muscle car era examples to cars like we see here, this 1968 Galaxie XL fastback. Will I end up with a Galaxie? I’m not sure but the math is pretty good, just like this car.

These machines with their menacing front end, long flowing lines, and awesome roof are under appreciated and under-seen in our opinion. This particular car is unrestored, is claimed to have its original 390 under the hood and we kind of love the character it has. The photos seem to indicate a really solid machine, rust seems to be surface at best on the bottom of the tank and the engine is grimy with age but it’s all there.

The interior of this car shines. Seriously the seats are mint, the simulated wood dash is 100% unmolested, and it looks comfy as hell.

It would be fun to get hold of the car and drive it for a while while working on a 428 for it. Swapping a four speed in would be priority down the line as well. If we were to buy this thing (we are not buying this thing) I don’t think I would touch the exterior. The original, kind of weatherbeaten look is awesome and adds character.

This thing is big, bad, and it has our attention.

I was there Thanksgiving weekend, must be a new entry. Curious how much Stateside tacks onto the price with these consignments.

Why would you put a 428 engine in. You could get a 429 in them. I have a 1969 with a 429 and it has factory bucket seats and center counsel

I had a 68 XL Fastback. Green on green. Apparently a rare 302/C4 with bucket seats and console shift. I still look for it every day. Best cruiser I have ever had.
