eBay Find: This 1972 AMC Matador Is Orange But Is It Worth Buying?

eBay Find: This 1972 AMC Matador Is Orange But Is It Worth Buying?

Ok, AMC fans do not have a conniption fit, K? We are not taking a shot at your favored brand or being disrespectful to the company that has been out of business for a few decades now. Instead, we are looking at a singular car that happens to be an AMC which is for sale on eBay at this moment. The car is a 1972 AMC Matator sedan with four doors, a kind of sloppy looking orange paint job, wheels, and a bone stock 390ci engine and interior. This looks to be the ultimate example of the “flip car” but maybe it isn’t. The body style and overall aesthetic does not appeal to a large portion of humanity. This is not a fastback Mustang or 1969 Camaro.

The front end styling on these cars has not held up that well as basically every car built in an Eastern bloc country looked like this. There was the big awkward grill, the bumperettes, and the big square corners around the nose. This was not just an ugly car, it was an old person ugly car. This car has the 390 engine, which is a plus. It also has single exhaust which is a double minus, deducting from his bank of credits.

The interior looks like it is stock, which is especially weird because of the color combo that has zero to do with the actual color of the car, or the charity, or anything. We’re guessing this thing was some shade of hideous green or something before the respray which coated half of the bottom of the car.

Neat car but is has been done wrong. Who would want to drive this? Single exhaust, loud paint, low hp engine, and all those doors? Even if you have kids, they would be laying down in the back seat.

A good friends dad had a green Matador sitting next to his house for years. After about a decade he said if you can get it running it’s yours.

We got it running all right. And we destroyed, I mean DESTROYED that thing running around on old strip mine. So much fun! Lucky we didn’t kill ourselves that weekend.

Call me weird but I like it, and even for the looks!

Fun Fact: the window frames are extruded aluminum

I’d rock it in a heart beat, but alas, the asking price is more proof that baby boomers have wtecked the old car hobby.

more and more dealers selling cars at bogus b-j auction prices on ebay. have to ask these ‘dealers’ who think they know the right price, would you buy it for that price for themselves. they would say no. so why would I buy it for that price. they just ruin the market at everybody’s expense.

I’m an AMC nut and can safely say 14K for a 2 door Matador is insane, much less a 4 door. And, as Bob pointed out, it looks like a 360, not a 390.

Couldn’t agree more with the other AMC guys here. The only way any Matador is worth that kind of dough is if Penske himself drove it. Also agree on the 360, the the 360 is no slouch.
