Apex Quiz: Has Anyone Participated In The New SCCA Classic American Muscle Autocross Class?

Apex Quiz: Has Anyone Participated In The New SCCA Classic American Muscle Autocross Class?

We were one of the first venues to report on the creation and ultimate addition of the Classic American Muscle class to the SCCA (Sports Car Club Of America) autocross program so consider this question a follow up to see if anyone has indulged their corner burning urge and tried it out for themselves. We’ve showed you action from autocross courses from across the country so far this spring but those were events geared toward the American muscle loving pro touring crowd anyway, we’re interested to see if the CAM category has drawn any more people out to the SCCA fold for a go.

Previously, if you showed up with a car like an old Camaro or Mustang and wanted to compete, you’d probably end up in a class that had you up against modern sport sedans and other stuff that even on a good day you’d not really be competitive with (unless you had some serious driving skills). It wasn’t that the SCCA was trying to punish anyone but they just didn’t have a class structure that made sense for cars like the ones we really love. Hell, when I ran around in Buford last year, I was matched up with a bunch of BMWs and other stuff of that ilk. It was really fun to show a couple of them the door but by the end of the day, the Caprice just wasn’t enough of a weapon to hang with the real fast stuff. Classic American Muscle does something that the SCCA has needed to do for a while, which is to create a happy place for guys and girls like us. While it is cool to show up with the weird car at the event (trust me, I know), it is even more fun when you have your own”pack” to hang out with.

So, has anyone tried it themselves or if you are an autocrosser and don’t have a CAM car but have been at events, have you seen people in the class?

CAM originated right here in Indiana, and there are no less than 10 cars per event so far — even this early on in the year. Big new Cameros have come out in ‘packs’ as you call them. I’m waiting to see what kind of crazy stuff comes out once the word gets out to some of the younger crew who daily mom’s old V8 Estate wagon and (please) someone shows up in a Delta 88…

This is going to be a class with some staying power if there’s enough attention to it at Divisionals and Nats. So come on heavy metal crew! Wanna keep the class? Bring your sleds and scare some cones.

We have run the first two events this year in CAM in our 94 Camara and we are trying to find out what index is being used for the class. They used our ESPN on the first event which I don’t think was correct. If anyone knows the index for the class please reply.
