We may wax nostalgic about how NASCAR used to be in the 1970s, but compared to most other racing series, the circle track guys still have one major downfall compared to everybody else: they will not play in the rain, no matter what. It’s a cheap punchline, sure, but it’s a valid one, and it’s because of incidents like what you will see here that show why those jokes will continue to be made.

It’s 1974 in Australia. The Supercar Scare has done damage, but racing will go on and the Ford Falcons are still wringing out tracks across the country. They had their issues, sure…the brakes were barely adequate at best and oil surging was an issue. Drivers needed an oil pressure gauge damn near as big as the tach to make sure that the 351 was going to live through the race. For the 1974 Bathurst race, John Goss and Kevin Bartlett ran this particular car through hell and back. The rain did no favors. Neither did a front wheel that started to break up, forcing the Falcon into the grass to make sure that it made it back to the pits for a new wheel. And just to add insult to injury, the windshield kept fogging up, forcing the driver to loosen up the belts to wipe the glass for a clear view. The win was a monstrous effort on their part, and you can see why by clicking on the video below.

And this year, 2017, we had drivers of mega-dollar Supercars using long-handled $2 squeegees to wipe the inside of the screens as they hammered down Conrod straight at 280+ kilometres per hour in pouring rain. Damn I love this race!
