SEMA 2018: Disguised LS Engines Were A Hot Trend At The Show – This “Nailhead” Was One!

There are always trends to be spotted at the SEMA show and 2018 was no different. Whether it was the continuing weirdness of huge trucks on short sidewall tires, C10 square bodies, or the emerging love of 1970s Ford trucks the market is embracing, there are loads to choose from. The most prevalent and perhaps quizzical were the disguised LS engines in many, many cars and trucks.

We’re not just talking about making one look like a small block Chevy or a big block Chevy which is pretty easy, we’re talking about seeing them fully dressed (with loads of work and dough invested) to look like small block Fords and even THIS ONE made to look like a Buick Nailhead V8. There are multiple sides to this one.

First there is the side of embracing the creativity and seeing that this is workmanship and craftsmanship on display.This it not just some junk glued to the engine, these guys took the long way home and really played it up. There was a small block Ford we saw with a dummy distributor and plug wires. The whole enchilada.

Many of the engines were simply using existing parts to look like something else. Not a whole lot of effort there in comparison to this thing and others we saw.

So is this cool? Is this lame? Is this a sign of someone wanting to really go all the way or a sign of someone who thinks that having “just an LS” isn’t cool? We want your opinion below!

    Twisted Shitrolet LS lovers destroying the heritage of the fine motors that form the “disguise” – I’d rather see an LS “disguised” as a lump of molten metal in a furnace together with the bodies of those suckers who carried out this automotive sacrilege….

      If any of those beautiful old motors could reliably make anywhere near the horsepower and torque of even a stock LS,I am sure they would still be MISSING from these cars because of how much they cost to just rebuild to stock.The SBC and BBC are both exempt for that last statement.Go get a hug from your boyfriend or a backrub,whatever you guys do to calm each other down!

      That’s a pretty good summary. I’d seen one example of an LS-swapped 5.0 Mustang that had the original late ’80s era Ford intake adapted to the LS heads. These disguises can be interesting but need to have a purpose.

    being stupid you can buy your (chevy)engine to go at 7-11.
    being smart and innovated, you can build a nailhead and be recognized as such.
    what would you rather be……….

    I can’t talk as I have a Cobra kit car with a 460 posing as a FE with surge tank, pointy valve covers and turkey pan etc. At least its a Ford posing as a Ford…

    The LS is a durable motor and easy to swap. I don’t see the big fuss. Well, except for the anti Chevy guys talking smack, but their Triton is at home because it shot out 3 spark plugs again.

    The LS “351W” in the blue 69 Cyclone was indeed very cleverly disguised and i had to look closely, but once I found out it was like that cute chick has a penis.
