The outpouring of emotion, admiration, and love towards Dan Gurney after his recent passing certainly proved just how big a deal this man was. From his driving talent to his engineering ability to his management prowess, Dan Gurney was a racing renaissance man who could literally do it all. In this video made by the people at Goodwood, we get to see Dan running “up the hill” over the years but also competing in races during the hight of his career. We also get to hear Gurney talk about his career and proudest accomplishments in his own words.
One of the things to pay attention to in the video. When you see Gurney standing and talking with people you’ll notice one thing, he’s taller than virtually all of them. Race car drivers are typically not really lanky people. Smaller, lighter, more compact, and petite are usually the attributes a race car driver’s physique is made up of. Gurney would never been mistaken for an offensive lineman but he was no spring chicken either.
From his hot rodding roots to winning races in NASCAR, Formula One, IndyCar, and sports car races by the pile, the man was one of a kind of he lived a long and adventurous life. Not totally restricted to four wheels, Gurney’s love of motorcycles is also briefly explored here and given its due.
They broke the mold when they made Dan Gurney and this video is further proof.
