The Mazda MX-6 Was A Ford Probe By Any Other Name – A Moderately Odd 1990s “Sporty Car”

Back in the late 1990s I worked as a camp counselor for a summer. A girl who lived in my town also worked there so we’d car pool out with a few other kids. At the time I had a 3rd Gen Camaro and she had a Mazda MX-6. The Camaro was actually the more comfortable car to jam four people into, which is an incredible thing to say. This Mazda MX-6 was a torture chamber to be in the back seat of and it was actually hilarious how bad it actually was. We commuted like 25 miles to this camp and after one week of riding in the thing, we all rebelled and her car was taken out of the rotation.

The 1990s was about the deepest period in time that Ford and Mazda worked together. The companies were basically making two identical product lines with slightly different styling and names. There was the Explorer and the Navajo, the Probe and the MX-6, and it did not stop there.

The Mazda MX-6 of this time frame was on the same chassis as the Probe, used the same engine as a Probe, and much of the interior was similar as well. It made sense for Mazda who needed  boost in America and Ford who needed to get themselves modernized and better positioned in the game.

An interesting look back at a quirky car!

The 4th generation Mustang after the fox body was replaced was going to be built on the MX6 chassis until the Mustang purists found out. After the Ford executives cleaned themselves of what had hit the fan they renamed that car the Probe, canned the stupid idea of a front wheel drive Mustang and built the 4th generation more retro to the 1st generation.
