The American Powertrain Tuesday Shift: A Supercharged Straight Eight, A Clutch Pedal, And A Hill Climb

The American Powertrain Tuesday Shift: A Supercharged Straight Eight, A Clutch Pedal, And A Hill Climb

We live in an exceptionally neat age where things we see on a magazine page will suddenly roar to life in front of our very eyes in video form. That’s exactly what you are about to watch. The car in question is the hot rod of Brian Thomas who lives in Utah. This is a car that gained quick and deserved fame on the pages of Hot Rod Magazine. You likely remember it. Powered by a McCulloch supercharged Packard straight eight and backed with a manual transmssion it was a long, low and skinny tired freak shot on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

It has a highly modified 1930 Ford Model A body, a cutdown lexan windshield, and a rear deck made out of the hood from a 1950s Ford truck. The wheelbase is 124 inches and the chassis, suspension, hell even the seats were all Brian’s work over an 11-month build period.

This is one of those cars where all the elements add up to the thing being amazingly cool. It is also one of those cars that if all the elements were not as they are you’d be a little let down. If this thing had an automatic in it we’d still enjoy it but with the clutch pedal and stick it is over the top awesome.

Watch Brian attack the 2016 Hot Rod Hillclimb in the car. He leans on it a couple of times and the vehicle’s light weight combined with the favorable gearing of the transmission, the massive torque of the supercharged straight eight and Brian’s heavy right foot make this an awesome watch!

Cool cars forever.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

    Awesome!

Bring it over to the UK and run it at Prescott hill climb to give those vintage Bugattis a thrashing.
