Neither Here Nor There: The 2022 Ford Equator Won’t Be Sold In The USA, But Is It A Sneak Preview Of Things To Come?

Neither Here Nor There: The 2022 Ford Equator Won’t Be Sold In The USA, But Is It A Sneak Preview Of Things To Come?

(By Tom Lohnes) – Have you ever looked at a Ford Explorer and thought “This doesn’t look enough like a Nissan”? Well, move to China and you’ll have your needs met by the 2022 Ford Equator.

Based on the Escape, the Equator isn’t going to be quite as sporty as the Explorer, or as good-looking. Under the hood and in front of those quad exhaust tips lies a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-pot good for 221 horsepower and 253 lb-ft. Inside, you’ll meet a dual-screen instrument cluster/infotainment setup that looks like it’s been ripped directly out of a Mercedes E-class. Other than the Nissan looks and underpowered engine, the Ford Equator is actually quite a luxurious SUV. With leather-appointed everything and standard captain’s chairs, you’ll be getting around in style in your Equator, sort of.

So, it’s pretty obvious that the Equator isn’t making it stateside, but it does offer us a good preview of the next generation of Ford interior design. Maybe it’ll come in the future with a new tune on the engine and some brawnier styling as a long-wheelbase Escape or maybe even a Lincoln model, but that is highly unlikely.
