This 1956 Cartoon About The History Of Building Safer Cars Is The Jetsons Before The Jetsons Existed!

This is a cool video to kill some time on a Saturday with! Made in 1956 you are going to see an Automobile Manufacturers Association film about the history of cars and how cars are getting ever safer each year. The thing that’s really nuts about the whole deal is that it is basically the Jetsons before the Jetsons existed! The other thing that’s great is the depiction of the year 2000 at the start of the thing. Mars is testing Q-bombs, the ads for a restaurant in the newspaper are active so they emit smells and there are magical computers that do pretty much everything. While we don’t have Q-bombs on Mars or the smell-o-vision ads, we do have those magical computers that do everything. In fact, you are reading this on one now.

We dig the hell out of the 1950s-ness of this film. The Automobile Manufacturers Association was interesting when it was at its most powerful. It was that body which came to the decision that domestic manufacturers were no longer going to be openly involved in racing. Of course everyone cheated, but you get the point. In fact, right about the time this thing came out was when the “ban” went into effect. Makes sense that the group would be pushing the idea of safety evolution over performance, eh?
