Lawn mower racing is one of those sports that seem easy to mock right off the bat and perhaps there are elements of it that are but when you get to the most serious wrung of the lawn mower racing ladder, the machines are like ultra powerful front engine go-karts with a high center of gravity. By the looks and sounds of the John Deere featured in this video, they can really rip. Heck, this guy is basically on slick tires and in the tall grass with the thing and it is damned near shocking how hard it accelerated between his donut spinning sessions.

From what we have read, racing mowers can make 45+ horsepower with factory based V-twin engines that have been modified in ways that every hot rodder is familiar with. From boring out the holes to sticking a more significant cam into the thing to beefing the compression, and doing all the stuff that every good speed freak does to any other engine speeds can top 60mph. Admittedly, we’re not experts in the field by a long shot. The chassis on this one looks pretty good because the driver is low slung and that should help to keep the thing planted in the corners. Rather than catching and rolling during these spins, the little Deere just rotates on its access and seems like it would be happy to do it for as long as the as the driver wanted to.
