This Self Described “500hp Death Trap” VW Cabriolet Is An All-Wheel Drive Freak Show

We love a good, honest ad online and this one certainly fits the bill. You are looking at a self-described “500hp Death Trap” version of a VW Cabriolet that is actually the one VW Cabriolet in the world that we do not wish to see sitting under the wheels of a monster truck. Why? The seller claims that the engine makes 500hp and that the car has some sort of an all wheel drive conversion. While the 500hp claim may be tall when we’re looking at a center bolt valve cover 350ci small block, the all wheel drive conversion really spins our crank because even if this thing has 350hp it will be fun as hell to drive. No details are given on what parts were used in the AWD system but the fact that it exists is awesome.

The car is for sale for $20,000 and the ad to peddle it is pretty freaking fantastic. We could go on for hours on this thing but the reality is that the seller did it in the best, funniest, and most honest way. His words (because it has to be a HIM, right?) are below.

Here’s the ad for this “500hp death trap” VW Cabriolet –

This is a 1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet street rod. It is 4 wheel drive and has a 350 chevy vortec engine that is around 500hp. It is running 3.43 gears with a limit slip rear axle. Car has a new top, new tires, new engine, new rear differential headers, dual 2 1/2 welded exhaust, a 700r4 trany, and several hundred hours of work in it. I am still working out some of the bugs, but as you can see by the pictures, it is a show stopper and gets lots of attention. I am not really looking to sell it, but am in need of cash, so figured I would put it out there and see if anyone is looking for an insane modern street rod. Cash talks. And for the rite price I am willing to listen. I would also be willing to build something custom and stupid for you, so feel free to call me if you have a bad idea and money burning a hole in your pocket. Thanks for looking. Galen

I was expecting something like a boosted to the moon VR6 mated to an Audi transaxle. This is even crazier.

You would think that there was no other motor on the planet apart from the usual Chevy hunka shit. An Audi V8 and quattro transmission would have done the job – but that would have taken some imagination which is something these Chevy-lovers sadly lack…

Right on Geordie… Putting a SBC and God only knows what kind of AWD system under a formerly FWD convertible VW shitbox takes no imagination what so ever. Hell I saw 4 of them on the way to work this morning…. If only someone had the smarts to put a German drivetrain into a German automobile. Now THAT would really be something!

Geordie, the sbc in my MGB puts out well over 500hp (aluminum rods, knife edge crank, billet solid roller cam, ported 492 angle plug heads), in my 2350 lbs.car. I can’t find much to fault it (maybe a bit much for the street). Cool, the full custom frame and suspension on my car (looks reasonably stock) took a ton of imagination. The above car could Not of been an easy build, the builder likes it, good enough for me.

I know Chuck. That was my point. Its obvious that the builder has talent and imagination to package what he did and make it look 90% stock. I think its killer. Your MGB sounds like a riot too. I thought my LS swapped rx7 had a good power to weight ratio but you’ve got me beat by 500lbs and 100hp.
