It is interesting that most of the hardcore OEM off-road models are aimed at a specific style of beyond the pavement action. The Raptor and TRX from Ford and Ram and the vehicles carrying the TRD moniker from Toyota are pre-runner style units. Designed to take on rolling and roiling desert terrain with speed and agility. This is but one of the things that sets the 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter apart from the pack. The intention here is not the wham, bam of a desert runner but rather the steady, competent, take it all on approach needed for an overloading rig. One that has to be ready for multiple scenarios, carry gear a long way in and out, and deliver off-road capability that ranges from river fording to rock crawling. In highly entertaining, stylish, and well-engineered fashion, Toyota has done just that with this rig. That said, nothing is perfect and we’ll get to that in a minute.
From the second you lay your eyes on the 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter, you know it means business. From the Everest green paint to the bronze colored wheels that hang onto 33″ tall tires, the ARB roof rack, and the tall snorkel, you are looking at something that goes beyond a simple off-road concept. We really loved the stance and look of the Trailhunter and if first impressions before you hit the key mean anything, this one looked like it was going to be a pile of fun. The snorkel is a little much for our tastes and it will play another larger role in this story a little later, but outside of that piece, we really enjoyed the outward styling of this rig.
The 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter is powered by a 2.4L turbocharged four cylinder engine that makes 278hp. This is augmented by a hybrid system that cranks another 48hp into it, for a total of 326hp. The engine runs through a nice working eight speed automatic transmission and it produces reasonably snappy performance. A 7.4 second 0-60 time is not rocket-level stuff but it is competent and there is plenty of passing power. The first couple gears of the transmission really rip by when you go all in on the throttle in the Trailhunter, making it a fun around-town driver. Fuel mileage? Toyota says 24-mpg on the highway and while we did not quite get there, we were in the ball park. Hey, it is a relatively large, tall, wide, and heavy SUV, all the good engineering in the world still has to kowtow to physics at some point.
Any OE off-roader is only as good as the suspension upgrades that a manufacturer adds to it. Happily in this case, Toyota made all the right calls. Like the previously mentioned OEM “fun” four wheel drives, this thing rides absolutely awesome because of the off-road friendly suspension. It offers 10″ of ground clearance, sits 2.0″ higher in the front than a typical four runner and 1.5″ higher in the back. Old Man Emu coil overs are the dampers up front and in the rear and Old Man Emu external reservoir shocks out back. You have the ability to electronically disconnect the sway bars from the cockpit when you get into the twisty rocks as well and need full articulation. By far our favorite part of the driving experience of the 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter was the ride quality and characteristics with this suspension. Home run.
Inside, the Trailhunter does not present itself in a hugely different way than most 4Runner models do…and there are nine different trim levels of these things. It is nicely appointed, we’d say that rear leg room was not as profound as we expected it to be, the seats and materials are all sufficient and comfortable enough to road trip in, the massive infotainment display is legit and fits the price point and expectation among buyers of these rigs, and the switch layout is simple and effective. We do not believe the interior is going to sell this vehicle. We do believe that the interior is not going to cost Toyota sales, either. It’s there, it is functional, and it strikes is as very “Toyota”…some may take that as a jab but that is not our intention.
Ok, now for snorkel talk. To me, the snorkel thing is very much a European four by four look, which I don’t hate but also don’t necessarily love. I do like how nicely Toyota styled this one to not interrupt the field of vision and doubly so how it really nicely integrates into the a-piller of the four runner. The thing that’s really wild about this thing is how loud it is, like all the time. Under hard acceleration it’s really wild, just like the engine trying to breathe through a straw and that is with the windows closed. Windows open it is insanely loud. There’s some noise at part throttle but you can really hear it going to down when accelerating or decelerating. The turbo noises and wooshing were fun for the first couple of days but after that it got to be kind of a lot and if this was going to be a daily driver, maybe you’d just tune it out after a while. All we know is that if we could option ours sans-snorkel, we would.
Final verdict? We’re big fans of the 2026 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter. The Toyota quality, the off-road capability, the straight forward nature of its styling, functionality, and overall execution locked it down for us. All that stuff does not come cheap as these machines are typically priced in the mid to upper $60,000 range. That has not been slowing down sales, though as these have been a hit with 4Runner buyers, and with nine levels of options to choose from, that’s saying something. This Trailhunder cuts through the fog, is fun to drive, a great looking truck, and one we know could handle its own in the backwoods.
