We Want The Next Turn: Ride Along In A Legends Racer At Castelletto Circuit!

Was there anything better than a trip to the go-karts when you were a young kid? Strapping yourself into the seat, the little motor out back pushing you faster than you dared ride your bike, that first taste of grip, lack of grip, and apexing? I was hooked my first drive, and begged unrelentingly for one of my own for years afterwards. That never happened…instead, I was treated to the world of off-road motorcycling and that merged into actual automobiles. But give me the shot and I’ll strap myself into a go-kart and cut laps…even if it means that a thirteen-year-old that weighs maybe a buck-ten will lap me. It’s why I’ve eyed Legends cars for a while. The combination of a Yamaha three-cylinder engine that is cranking out 140 horsepower in a vehicle that weights in at 1,300 pounds before driver makes for a fantastic setup. Since Legends cars are a spec series, there’s minimal changes allowed from car to car. You can work camber and caster, ride height, tire pressures and a couple of other details, and you can choose from a body style that ranges between 1934 and 1940, depending on what’s available at the time.

A motorcycle engine in what would effectively be a go kart for adults? Twist my arm, please. I’ll take a 1937 Dodge coupe body and you can cut me loose on any road course the world over…I’ll be one happy individual up until the fuel runs out. To get a taste, you’ll ride along with 19Bozzy92 as he rips this maniacal little machine aroudn Castelletto Circuit in northern Italy. I defy you to say that you wouldn’t like to be in his place.

Legend’s are super cool, and they have built a butt-load of them. I think they are the most prolific manufactured race cars ever built! But the one thing is they are strickly required to run as out-of-the-box racers. The similar in appearance Dwarf cars have more lattitude allowed, like modified engines of any manufacturer, where the Legends, I believe, are all Yamaha.

They are fast but so twitchy. When they ran at our local 1/4 Mike paved oval, they ran lap times close to the late models, but usually had a yellow flag and a restart every other lap.
