The Jason Cammisa hosted series, “Know It All” has been one of the best additions to the Hagerty programming lineup this year. We have showed you previous episodes about stuff like AWD and why certain engines sound the way they do. This time we’re getting a lesson on the cold start cycle and why a typical engine sounds and acts differently when it is first fired as opposed to when it had made it all the way to optimal operating temperature. There are a few factors, none of which are ground breaking but some of this information is really interesting, especially when he talks about hybrids and what their “cold start” program is like.
This little tid-bits of knowledge are awesome for guys like my sons who eat shows like this up. Why? It is perfectly digestible for them, told in an educational and entertaining way, and helps them to understand some of the mechanical things they see and hear when the car is fired up at the house or anywhere else for that matter.
Of course, there’s another whole element of this story that the show is missing and that’s the old school “cold start” routine. This was handled with a manual choke cable or if you were fancy pants with a carb that had the fast idle cam and thermostatic spring to handle it all for you a flick of the key and eventually a rap of the gas to “kick it down” back to regular idle.
