If you take all of the elements we love in old Chevy trucks and stick them together you’d get something that looks eerily similar to this 1958 Apache that is equipped with NAPCO four wheel drive, a small block engine, a four speed with a three mile long lever and just enough lift to really toughen the whole thing up. As much as we love these old high riding four wheel drives stock with their narrow and tough looking tires, there maintain nice tread pattern and fill the wheel wells perfectly so the thing just looks ready to go.
The paint is flipping awesome with the bright red and cream accents. Of course I am a big fan of a white roof on a truck and this one has it along with the nice chrome mirrors on the doors which look great and it is a short box truck which makes it very much more valuable on top of everything else. Of course the major story is the NAPCO four wheel drive. NAPCO was the supplier for GM for several years on the production line, making the four wheel drive installs. GM did not have its own system so they farmed the work of development and engineering out to NAPCO. Believe it or not, four wheel drive was not something everyone in town had or waned back then. Farmers, construction guys, etc opted for the four by four trucks but they were a very small slice of the business and GM did not see the need for the investment at the time because of volume and NAPCO built the parts and did the work.
There are still pieces and parts floating around out there but the stuff does command top money and the axles were built like anvils with huge pinion gears and beefy ring gears along with equally mondo axles. But here’s the thing. This truck is not just all about the drivetrain. The little 350 engine under the hood is in prime shape, the interior looks like brand new, and the thing has THREE levers coming up through the floor. THREE! We dream about operating stuff with three levers.
We’re just rambling at this point but that is only because we’re totally in love!
