This is awesome. We have long loved restoration videos here at BangShift and they do not come much more satisfying than this one. Shot in a foreign land that we cannot identify, we watch the talented hands of a guy take this rusty and crusty gearbox that looks like it lived at the bottom of a swamp for 100 years and restore it to as new condition. We have no idea what this thing would have come off of. We’re guessing some sort of industrial equipment or a truck but the orientation of the thing is throwing us off.
When you first see this thing, you’ll do what we did and diagnose it as a complete lost cause. Loads of work with a chipping hammer gets rid of the scale and crud on the outside. What is left is still not much to see. Everything it rotted, seized on, and awful looking. The thing does spin freely as you can see during the video. When the top finally comes off there’s a mild payoff. The gears look mint. Obviously the seals and bearings are likely not as peachy looking as the gears so the whole thing gets blown apart.
There are moments in this video when we yell at the screen, “get a ratchet!” as the worker does most of the stuff with wrenches.
Overall this is one of our favorite restoration videos because it’s a neat piece of kit that gets fixed up and the end product is beautiful.
