This Duramax Powered Sand Rail Is One Coal Rolling, Hill Climbing, Paddle Tire Hot Rod

Diesel engines don’t normally end up in conversations about insane power to weight ratios because more often than not, those type of mills are mounted into large and heavy vehicles. This video proves that it isn’t always the case, though because what you are going to see is a sand rail, racing on the snow, powered by a hot rodded Duramax diesel V8. Yesterday, Chad ran a video showing a cool hill climb event with trucks and mud boggers running up a snow covered ski slope and this sand rail really caught my eye because of the plume of sooty smoke it released when accelerating up the hill. I went into Google-Fu mode and managed to find this video which is a tour of the buggy as well as some additional footage from the snow hill climb.

As you will see, the sand rail has plenty of horsepower to run with the gas powered vehicles it faces off with and even bests a couple of them but because it is just two wheel drive and because of its low slug stance, it has big time trouble getting itself off the starting line and even steering once the big paddle tires really start to dig. It is pretty funny to see the driver and his passenger get blasted with soggy snow when the low front end basically becomes a shovel.

Sand rails are something I have zero experience with being here in New England but I am fascinated with them because few vehicles on Earth outside of dragsters have the power to weight situation these things have. With this one having a Duramax in it, my interest/lust was cranked over to level 11. I’d pay this guy just for a ride!

One of our guys shared the article with me. Nice write up. You were 100% correct, getting blasted with the snow and having it fill the car up to the middle of your stomach was not fun. The rest of the way up was a blast though. We have some changes in mind to make it more competitive for next year. If you want a ride keep an eye on our Facebook page, we take it out to the silver lake sand dunes and give rides.

Roll Coal: The act of pouring copious amounts of black sooty smoke from a diesel engine’s exhaust often in conjunction with a gratuitous display of horsepower or torque, based on the resemblance to a coal fired locomotive’s smoke stack. The conditions are often the result of increased timing, higher levels of boost, and over-fueling the engine. example: Did you see that last tractor? He had a full pull and was rolling coal the whole way. Note: Rollin’ Coal may not be seen in New England and is probably illegal in California
