Is This Legal? Someone In Texas Is Selling A T-72 Tank That Can Still Fire Live Rounds! Anyone Have Ted Nugent’s Number?

Is This Legal? Someone In Texas Is Selling A T-72 Tank That Can Still Fire Live Rounds! Anyone Have Ted Nugent’s Number?

BangShifter Scott Brown sent us the CL ad link for a person who was actually attempting to sell a fully functional T-72 battle tank on Craigslist. He asked if I would like the tank for its capability in the snow and while that would have been one of the cool things about it, the ability to pretty much blow up anything I wanted would have been the primary draw for me. Yes, this tank is 100% functional in the war sense and the ad says as much with a low key note that reads, “this tank is Active and able to fire live rounds that you may have other details below you may email me if you are interested.” We’re thinking that the FBI or some other agency may have skipped the email and gone straight to a first hand visit. Can you actually sell a functioning battle tank like a used Honda? That’s an honest question because we don’t know the legal answer. Ok, being Texas we’re sure there may actually be some sort of tax incentive to go along with selling your tank, but we’re still asking because we want to know.

The second issue with owning this tank is that it is a T-72, a fine unit but it is going to stick out like a sore thumb when you hang out with your pals that all have British Challengers, American Shermans, Abrams, and Sheridans, and your French pals who….HAHAH who are we kidding. Your French pals don’t own any tanks. We crack us up sometimes. Anywho….

Maybe owning a battle tank isn’t THAT dangerous because purchasing the shells, training a crew, and actually “practicing” with it somewhere would probably raise the suspicions of the local populace but the thought of private selling one on Craigslist is a little crazy. You’d still have the equivalent of a rolling machine gun nest that you COULD get ammo for pretty easily and the we all remember the guy who armored up the bulldozer and shot up his down years ago, so in the wrong hands, this would not be a happy ending.

Is the ad fishy? The one tell may be the asking price which is only $20,000. Hey, it got our attention!

Because by the time you see this the ad will probably be gone, here’s the text:

Brian…Look at the background behind the tanks, that’s a military storage yard somewhere besides San Antonio, Tx. Those trees are not native to southern Texas. If I had to guess, they’re still back in the Czech Republic and it would be at least $20,000×2 to get them to this country. Finally, the ATF won’t allow tanks on any heavy duty military weapons into this country unless they are “demilled” or possibly if they are going to a gov’t. sponsored museum. Fishy ain’t the word I’d use

From what I can gleam . . . yes it is legal to own a fully functional (including main gun) tank. But here is the kicker . . . you need a special Federal Permit to own the ammo for the main gun.

You can drive you tank around town as long as you adhere to all the traffic laws of the town, county, state where it located.

I have a friend that owns a Panzer and uses it for re-enactments. By law he had to decommission the long gun, so he had it converted to an air cannon. Even then he has to maintain numerous permits, especially when transporting across state lines. He lives on a few acres on the edge of town that backs up to a ritzy shopping area. He decided to pull it out of the barn and rip around the fields one day. You should have seen the cop fest!

Should you guys really be posting info about cars that can go way over the legal posted speed limit? Why should anyone be able to own or drive such a car on public roads? Not apples to apples, but let’s not start dictating what law abiding citizens should and shouldn’t have unless they’ve stated or show strong signs to misuse it (ie Iran with a nuke or a felon career criminal with a firearm).

An old neighbor had a sherman tank which he sold to a collector in texas , they decommisioned the main gun , shipped the tank then sent a spare in different crates as oil well parts. This happened in the late 70s . I hope the ATF and Customs are wiser now .

Its about like all the machine guns the Swiss have without any machine gun crime, or Dillon and his jet with the 20mm cannons in it. If you can afford it you’re not the type to commit crime with it, leave that to the thug with the Hi-Point.

YES is the answer (in MOST but not all states. But the restrictions are state law not federal). A simple search of the ATF website is in order for you guys.

But it does take being a SOT (special occupation taxpayer) which is just the ATF’s way of saying you have the correct type license needed.

Didn’t Bangshift do an article several months back about the LARGEST EVER auction of tanks in Calif.
